The cleanest way to explain even is this: a number is even if you can split it into two equal groups with nothing left over. A number is odd if there is always one left standing alone.
Try it with real objects. Grab a small pile of buttons, coins, or dried pasta.
- Give your child 8 items and ask them to make pairs.
- Every item finds a partner, so 8 is even.
- Now hand them 7 items and pair those up.
- One is left with no partner, so 7 is odd.
Let them discover the rule themselves. After a few rounds, ask what they notice. Children remember ideas they figure out far better than rules they are told.
The Shortcut Every Child Should Learn
Once the pairing idea makes sense, teach the fast trick: you only need to look at the last digit.
- Numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 are even.
- Numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 are odd.
This works for any size number. 3,472 is even because it ends in 2. 1,655 is odd because it ends in 5. Point out that they do not need to check the whole number, which feels like a shortcut and keeps confidence high.

You do not need worksheets to reinforce this. The world is full of numbers.
- House numbers: on a walk, guess whether the next house is odd or even.
- Snacks: split grapes or crackers and ask if they share evenly.

- Egg cartons: a carton holds 12, an even number, so pairs always work.

A Quick Game to Cement It
Try Odd One Out. Take turns saying a number. If it is even, you both clap. If it is odd, you both freeze. Speed it up gradually. The pause to decide is exactly the mental work you want, and the silliness keeps it fun.
For older children, add a twist: what happens when you add two even numbers, two odd numbers, or one of each? Let them test with objects.
